# hushrun and the alternatives

hushrun overlaps with two groups of tools. Build systems such as Nx, Turborepo and Bazel reuse task results from a cache. Promotion tools such as Kargo and JFrog Artifactory move an artifact between environments. hushrun does a version of each, without asking you to adopt a build system, and it works alongside them.

## Reusing check results

| | hushrun | Nx with Nx Cloud | Turborepo | Bazel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What you adopt | A wrapper around your commands | An Nx workspace | `turbo.json` and `package.json` scripts | `BUILD` files for each package |
| Languages | Any | JavaScript first, with plugins for others | JavaScript first; others through `package.json` scripts | Any, with rules for each |
| What it compares | The repository's files, or a scope's | Each task's declared inputs | Each task's inputs | Each action's declared inputs |
| A one-package change | Runs every check, unless you set scopes | Runs what's affected | Runs what's affected | Runs what's affected |
| Restores outputs | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Deploys what it validated | Yes | No | No | No |

Choose a build system when a large monorepo needs precision, and you're ready to describe it. Choose hushrun when you want repeated checks gone this week, in a repository of any shape, or when laptops, CI and agents need to share results.

## Moving an artifact

| | hushrun | Kargo | JFrog Artifactory |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A CLI in your CI, and hushrun's server | A Kubernetes controller for GitOps | An artifact repository |
| What moves | An image, copied by digest | New versions, through stages | A build or image, between repositories |
| Who deploys | Your CI's own deploy step | An agent such as Argo CD | Your pipeline |
| Decides from | Signed evidence for these exact files | Verification you configure per stage | What your pipeline runs, or JFrog AppTrust's policies |
| Needs Kubernetes | No | Yes | No |

## Without a new tool

Plenty of repeated work goes away with configuration: trigger rules, `concurrency`, path filters and dependency caches. Start with [Why CI runs the same tests twice](https://hushrun.com/docs/guides/duplicate-ci-runs.md) and [Skip CI when the code hasn't changed](https://hushrun.com/docs/guides/skip-ci.md). GitHub's `actions/cache` restores files and doesn't decide whether a job runs, so it complements all of the tools here.

## Newer tools

Signed results for coding agents became a category of its own in 2026. Two products overlap with `hushrun run`, and we haven't tested either in depth:

- [Pushgate](https://pushgate.dev), by TestifySec: a git remote that gates a push on signed evidence that checks passed for the exact commit.
- [Chainguard Checks](https://www.chainguard.dev/products/checks): hosted checks, before a push or on pull requests, in beta since October 2026.

Neither documents promotion of one artifact from staging to production by digest, which is hushrun's other half.
